The "Unkillable" ZZ Plant: Complete Zamioculcas Care Guide

The "Unkillable" ZZ Plant: Complete Zamioculcas Care Guide

If you’ve ever thought you just “can’t grow plants” because you have a huge brown thumb, then I have a surprise for you….

Zamioculcas Zamiifolia, or the “ZZ plant”, is the plant for you! It’s almost like it was designed for new gardeners that tend to kill plants. It’s one of the hardiest houseplants you’ll come across, making it the perfect choice for a beginner gardener.

In this guide, we’ll take a look at the incredibly easy to care for Zamioculcas zamiifolia, more commonly referred to simply as the ZZ plant.

I touch on ZZ plant propagation as well, as you’ll probably want more of these babies in your home.

  3. Tarantella LaRouge on September 12, 2022 at 6:11 pm

if you are an overwatering person, you will kill this plant as quickly as a month or two !

  4. ilyana ismail on September 12, 2022 at 6:12 pm

I should’ve bought the ZZ plant I saw in Wilko last month. I really want one now. 😅

  5. Sally Webbe on September 12, 2022 at 6:13 pm

Ha Ha Ha….I managed to kill one. Now I’m trying to propagate the last petiole and its 11 leaves. Wish me luck.

Okay so I have a beautiful ZZ plant and it keeps growing a lot! I recently over-watered it and there are a couple of now-yellow stems. I’ve taken it out of the holding pot to dry out the soil (so the main pot can drain out). Is it okay to cut these back? Will it still grow? I don’t want to kill it but it’s kinda getting too big for where I have it. Thanks 🙂

On the spider plant can you give it coffee ?

  9. John F on September 12, 2022 at 6:17 pm

I just bought a medium sized one of these for £2 because the pot was damaged. Nothing wrong with it otherwise. Unfortunately, I didnt realise they are toxic to pets and I have a cat who sometimes takes an interest in my plants, so I might have to give it away (the plant, not the cat!)

  12. KristinaG3 on September 12, 2022 at 6:17 pm

Not sure what to do when my plants just get too big (and I’m new to planting lol) my jade plants got so huge, like a tree. Took it to work to give away & my coworkers were amazed at how big it was they took it. Now my zz plant is getting big but I’m worried about the spots I’m now noticing.

  13. Mai N on September 12, 2022 at 6:19 pm

Is it ok to cut it if ends died. I found one someone threw away

  14. P H on September 12, 2022 at 6:20 pm

Isn’t it poisonous to the touch?

  15. Jaye Johnson on September 12, 2022 at 6:23 pm

Just bought my first zz yesterday, she is absolutely beautiful with about 20 stems for just $13. She does look fake.

  16. Victor Millen on September 12, 2022 at 6:25 pm

  17. Sannu Naveen on September 12, 2022 at 6:27 pm

:38 – I chopped it in half and laughed as it died, only to find it had actually formed caluses, to be planted again…

  18. Anita Stevenson on September 12, 2022 at 6:29 pm

I learn so so much from you
From my gardens outside to my jungle inside .. today I finally added a giant ZZ plant to my never ending collection inside .. but Q.I thought I heard I could put it in very low light corner of my house? But no?

  20. Frank Chan on September 12, 2022 at 6:30 pm

Thanks for making this video for caring the ZZ plant

  21. Not Franky on September 12, 2022 at 6:31 pm

You cant kill them even if you chopped off all leaves as long as the rhizome is partially exposed to light it will grow new stems to actually kill it you would have to water it and keep it wet forever so it rots.

  22. Spirit on September 12, 2022 at 6:33 pm

Great upload..to the point and on point..thanks.. question..do you think this will work in a bathroom with absolutely no light as I haven’t a window.

  23. Sophia Deligianni on September 12, 2022 at 6:34 pm

They really do follow the light! :’D

  24. darthlaurel on September 12, 2022 at 6:34 pm

I just chopped one in more than half…..could not believe how hard it was to get the rhizomes out of the original pot without breaking that pot.
I have finger’s crossed re its survival.

  25. Darkbluesun on September 12, 2022 at 6:35 pm

No pests because the ZZ plant is poisonous when ingested.

  35. Diane Roberts on September 12, 2022 at 6:42 pm

Great information thank you i bought a zz plant iv seperated mine from its roots is that ok?

  36. Malichka on September 12, 2022 at 6:44 pm

Great video! I’d love your advice for a small zz plant in my low light bedroom: the tip (4-5 mm) of a few leaves have turned yellow. What could be the cause? I might have been slow at watering it this summer, but pretty sure I watered it at least once a month. My hunch is that it would benefit from being vaporised with water about once a week. What do you think? I have a new gorgeous medium-size zz plant and I want to make sure it will be happy (in my low light corridor).

I’ve had my zz plant for about 6months , the longest time I’ve had a plant stay alive , I’m such a bad plant parent and I think I’m overwatering her 😥 / starving her.

    Zizi in French means penis

  47. Carol Owen on September 12, 2022 at 7:02 pm

You can kill it if it doesn’t have proper drainage. I was given one by a neighbor. Did not know there weren’t drainage holes in the pot. It got root rot. I cut off the good petioles, put them in water 2 months to form roots. Put them in soil this afternoon. Keeping my fingers crossed it will grow.

  48. brunel23 on September 12, 2022 at 7:03 pm

I want to buy a ZZ Plant, but the only space I have is nowhere near a window. The main light source would be standard lightbulbs. Would it survive?

  49. zynbw on September 12, 2022 at 7:03 pm

This is gonna be my first plant!
