how do you control water problems in the sunken because it looks awsome just fear of rain water staying in and mosquito.

  6. Tracy Thomas on September 21, 2022 at 6:49 pm

I can take a couple of these ideas and incorporate them in my very small space. However, these designs are heavy on hardscapes. I prefer having a yard and garden. I’ll use the pergola idea & the bamboo. Everything else is a pass for me.

  7. Victor M Hogue on September 21, 2022 at 6:49 pm

One thing about Planting Bamboo. I Install a 10" diameter x 12" length of PVC section in the ground and plant the Bamboo inside, this way the bamboo can’t spread. Yahoo!

Linda Vater has 2 issues in her town garden. Privacy with visual “pollution” and double fences. Each neighbor has a fence backing her fence.

My favorite was creating a destination space and cover. Living in Texas where it is hot, hot , hot would love to spend more time outside but just melt in the sun. Need to have a cover and even screened space to keep the bugs out.

  19. Modupe Ajibola on September 21, 2022 at 7:04 pm

best was the advice to get the design on paper, professionally or otherwise. Thank you

  20. Jason Lohorn on September 21, 2022 at 7:05 pm

To start just le it be minimal it’s a windy and hot area

  27. R DC on September 21, 2022 at 7:24 pm

    These are not small yards

  28. Jessica Breitbarth on September 21, 2022 at 7:25 pm

I’m actually designing a front courtyard. I’ve thought of many of these, but the sunken space was new. I’d love to figure out a way to add cover in my backyard without detracting from the expansive view.

  29. totally not a famous person with a fake name on September 21, 2022 at 7:27 pm

secret 1 is make friends who aren’t so fcking shallow that they judge you on how your yard looks

  30. Stephanie Crothers on September 21, 2022 at 7:28 pm

My favorite part was the fire pit ideas. My yard is so small. I’m surrounded by neighbors on all 3 sides. My yard is 17 long and 35 ft deep. You should see the before photos. The yard was covered in 2 weedy raised garden beds, 5 very overgrown hydrangeas, 3 azaleas and unruly tiger lillies whose roots were entangled with weed block and gravel rocks the previous owners laid down to combat weeds, which didn’t work. At all. I hired landscapers to tear them all out and grade the yard because water pooled around in the middle of the yard when it poured. (Landlocked by neighbors who have the same problem). Unfortunately they could only grade to a certain point because the neighbor behind us has a HUGE tree that butts right against our fence and the roots go right into our yard. It still puddles but not as bad.

I have an old 12×12 patio from the previous owners that I intend to powerwash and then add a patio table. We just installed a 7×7 shed so we actually have a place to store the manual push mower (thats how small the grass space is), weed wacker, etc. Next summer I want to install a firepit area a couple feet away from the patio using crushed oyster shells.

Great guide. I need help designing my back yard remodel.

  33. Son Ne on September 21, 2022 at 7:28 pm

You do realize though that the images of what you are showing as ‘small’ is actually not small at all some of the spaces are actually quite big they just look small after everything that was added. LMAO

  34. Precy Oliveros on September 21, 2022 at 7:29 pm

I am always watching your videos even Im washing dishes. I love it. I have a huge patio and front and backyard but for it’s boring. I want to make a huge make over of it.

Your tight space us my whole house’s space LOL…

  38. Gretchen Koenig, LMFT on September 21, 2022 at 7:31 pm

You sound pretentious, especially with your videos.

  39. jbroti 004 on September 21, 2022 at 7:35 pm

These are all good options but I wanna circle back to the water features. Good examples but most shown were quite expensive depending on the clients. A very easy and inexpensive option would be to create patio ponds or potted ponds. Here you can create pond ecosystems with plants and fish and still retain that white water noise. Patio ponds also look great side by side to other potted plants.

  40. cs creative on September 21, 2022 at 7:35 pm

Love the examples but they weren’t small by far.

  41. B. Chaney on September 21, 2022 at 7:36 pm

8:57 get a designer. – a good designer. You don’t know how many times my drawings have changed – completely, because I later realized the design I created would not work.

  42. Steve Coleman on September 21, 2022 at 7:38 pm

Liked the last tip on a sunken space. My new home has about a three foot downward slope 40 feet from the house where my original plan was to have a 12×16 patio poured and to install my same size two roof metal gazebo. Now I’m thinking a walkway and landscaping with lighting might be a better transition.

  43. SunVenusMoon on September 21, 2022 at 7:38 pm
