I’ve watched several instructional videos on how to set up our patio picker. This was by far the best video I’ve seen yet. You gave a good view of how the tube should be placed and described so well how the the system worked! Thank you so much!!

I have 4 and they’ve been outside for a few weeks. I did not use the mulch covers so could that be slowing my growth.

Nice job showing the set up! I would suggest however that these boxes, if you are growing most tomato varieties, should only hold one tomato plant and perhaps a few smaller, and helpful companion plants like marigold and chives. Generally speaking, most tomato plants will do best with 24-36" between plants to allow for air circulation and reduce disease. If you do a little research on companion planting, you can find things to plant which can aid your tomato plant. You just want to make certain they won’t grow so big that they also reduce air circulation. For example, basil is good to plant near tomatoes in a large garden with proper spacing, but basil itself can grow pretty large with a good water supply which you would have here. My tomatoes that I have grown, when I water them well grow VERY large, particularly the indeterminate variety which keep on growing. Choosing a determinate variety, or a type which stays very small, such as a patio tomato, may allow you to put more in your planter.

Nice video! How did your plants do? Were there too many in the planter or did it work out after all?

  19. Uchiha_Shisui on November 23, 2022 at 10:09 pm

Except you’re not supposed to use soil….it says that clearly over and over in the instructions.

I was going to make a small DIY Sub Irrigate Planter but I saw this product in a local hardware store. To save time, I just picked one. And I’m glad I saw your video because I had a bit hard time understanding the official video linked. Thanks!

I was thinking of using some window screen on top of the aeration screen. Just to help a little more with keeping soil from falling through the holes into the reservoir.

  35. Erik on November 23, 2022 at 10:32 pm

Thank you. Had this for 3 yrs and never new how to use it. So the plants already need a few inches of growth correct? You can just place seeds in this and water it?
