Better Homes & Gardens marks 100 years

This month Better Homes & Gardens is publishing its 100th anniversary commemorative issue, celebrating a century of creative cooking, gardening and style advice, in a magazine that has become a mainstay in American homes. Correspondent Serena Altschul visits BH&G’s test garden and test kitchens in Des Moines, Iowa, where recipes and domestic how-to hints are dished up.

What a shame they’ve gotten so far away from what the magazine was built on. Today it’s unreasonable homes to emulate, ridiculously contemporary recipes and no reader interaction. The old magazines offer so much more to the reader than the new one does.

I am a longtime subscriber and was shocked at Harry Styles on a recent cover. Well, I did what any devoted subscriber would do. I fired off a Letter to the Editor! I actually love BH&G.

I have a 1942 edition of the "Better Homes & Gardens Cook Book" that belonged to my grandmother. There are penciled notes in the margins and a few spills on the pages. All of which make it even more precious to me. Because of WWII, there are many recipes that have substitutions, based on limited food types during the war.

No politics but Obama on the cover…. Hmmm

After renting for 12 years my parents finally bought a home. I remember Mom subscribing to BHG 1965. She ordered various kits for decorating projects. She got one of the cookbooks. I basically taught myself to cook from 4th grade on using that same cookbook. Congratulations on 100 years!

Best sugar cookie recipe I have ever had is from Better Homes and Gardens. My mom used it all through the ’80s and I’ve been making them since the ’90s. Great magazine and a stable in our home growing up.

I was hoping to get into the nostalgic celebration , when cover to cover , it struck me as being one kind of people and one kind only . The taste it left in my mouth … well, I wouldn’t want to eat it or grow it or live in it .

Sad to say, that after subscribing since my first home in 1978, they sent me a notice that I would no longer get a printed copy mailed to me. I do not want to look at digital issues, so that is that. I said to cancel and refund any left over issues. Never heard a word. :o(

This used to be a fine magazine. Generations of women in my family have enjoyed it, and looked forward to receiving each edition. I canceled my subscription, however, when the issue arrived containing the strange photos of Harry Styles. Too many of the ever-dwindling number of pages of BHG were dedicated to this layout, and we frankly didn’t see the purpose. Sadly, we now feel alienated by the content of a magazine we grew up with, and loved.

  25. Amy Brinkley on September 21, 2022 at 7:17 pm

I enjoyed the Harry Styles issue. The cover caught my attention – so different! Yet it was about home and life and I thought it was a fine feature for a summer edition magazine.

The BHG gives ideas to people to improve their lives. Us poor people can’t afford all of it, but a ray of sunshine is better than darkness.

As my love of magazines is in it’s twilight, now hard to find ones still published, my heart was so happy to see BH&G enlarged and ready to meet my magazine addiction. I will treasure every issue now. Thank you for sticking around.

My friend thought a more appropriate title would be Better Homes Than Yours.
