Self Sufficient Me is based on our small 3-acre property/homestead in SE Queensland Australia about 45kms north of Brisbane – the climate is subtropical (similar to Florida). I started SSM in 2011 as a blog website project where I document and write about backyard food growing, self-sufficiency, and urban farming in general. I love sharing my foodie and DIY adventures online so come along with me and let’s get into it! Cheers, Mark ๐Ÿ™‚

I have a question. These veggies are planted like this (higher from the ground point) in order to save them from flooding?

  22. Oscar Rodriguez on March 24, 2019 at 7:50 pm

"Right here mate we have a carrot. It’s sleeping right now but grab it by it’s hair and pull it out. Oh crikey it’s a big one."

    Best phrases in this video:
1:28 – beans means HURRY UP and GROW them
3:32 – get on the BOOTS and plant some ZUUCs

I like this guy. You remind me of myself. It’s not hard to tell that you love gardening and beer. Good beer. And of course homemade moonshine. This guy’s accent is on point. He could easily make a living doing documentaries. I didn’t get your name but if you do read this good job brother I enjoyed your video

0:46 no, beans are toxic if eaten uncooked, as far as i know

  34. james on March 24, 2019 at 8:05 pm

    You shouldn’t eat raw beans.

  35. Lily Creek on March 24, 2019 at 8:10 pm

carrots are amazingly tough, I planted some in pots last year, a couple didn’t get very big so I just left them in the pot all winter, they’re STILL green and growing! (after weeks of below freezing weather)

  36. Josh Adams on March 24, 2019 at 8:11 pm

What about chocolate cake? Is that easy?

  43. conservativetothecor on March 24, 2019 at 8:20 pm

I know you can make squash puffs from the mail squash blossoms but I wonder if you can do anything with the carrot tops. Ill have to look into that.

  44. L Flow on March 24, 2019 at 8:21 pm

Fun fact. Orange carrots were bred in the Netherlands.

  45. Craig Carmichael on March 24, 2019 at 8:22 pm

Let’s see… My beans of any variety hardly produce (peas did better), the carrots get rust flies, the slugs eat most everything, and I don’t like radishes. Tomato plants with almost no tomatos. Potatos do pretty well. But if the deer get in they will eat everything. My new location (Haida Gwaii BC, 53.4 degrees north) is certainly challenging to garden! Now that it’s finally stopped freezing out, I’d better get my greenhouse finished quick because it’s time to plant it!
