When landscaping and gardening in autumn, choose plants and trees with vibrant colors. Fall, though, can still be an interesting time for trees. In the fall, the foliage displays every color of the rainbow. There are many variations in leaf color with different varieties of Maple, Beech and Dogwood trees that can give you lively yellows and deep crimsons. There are practically as many types of shrubs chosen for their fall colors are there are gardeners! Barberry, hydrangea and cotoneaster are particularly popular choices.
Broad-spectrum pesticides should be avoided in your garden. If your pesticide has too wide a range of targets, it can kill off useful insects that fight off other pests. Many times good bugs will be more sensitive to harmful pesticides than the ones you are trying to get rid of. If your good bug population goes down, your problem will only get worse. When this happens, you will spray another round of pesticides to get rid of the pests, thus creating a never-ending cycle for yourself.
Bumble bees are great helpers in your garden, because they assist in pollinating your plants. There are harmful bees though, like the carpenter bee, which creates its nest by eating through wood. In general, bees are beneficial to your garden, so the best thing to do is to let them be so they can do their job.
Transfer your favorite plants indoors to rescue them from the winter frosts. Perhaps save the most resistant or expensive plants. Dig carefully around the roots and transfer the plants to a pot.
Some houseplants might need humidity. You can increase the humidity for your plants, without making your home uncomfortable, by grouping several plants in one large pot. Another way to get humidity to your houseplants is to mist them with water one to two times daily.
One of the best ways to improve your garden is by mulching. Not only does it prevent weeds from sprouting, but a good layer of mulch can also retain soil moisture.
Learn the best harvest time for each vegetable. Every type of vegetable has a different moment of ripeness. Baby peas, for example have much better flavor if they are harvested early in the ripening process, as does zucchini. Tomatoes, though, are tastiest when they have been allowed to ripen on the vine as long as possible. Remember that the vegetables will taste best if you harvest them at the proper time.
For proper optimum growth, plants require sufficient amounts of carbon dioxide (CO2). Plants tend to grow better when the CO2 levels are higher. The best method to obtain a high amount is to get access to a greenhouse. A greenhouse will help maintain a high level of CO2 and cause the plants to grow faster.
To remove any salt deposits from a clay pot, use some rubbing alcohol and vinegar. When you have plants in clay pots, ugly looking salt deposits may accumulate on the outside after a while. Make a solution with equal parts rubbing alcohol, water and white vinegar. Spray this on clay pots where salt deposits have built up. After spraying, scrub your pot with a kitchen brush. The salt will soon be gone. Then you want to rinse the pot and set it out to dry. It should be dry before you use it for another plant.
