Sorry Gary, but the BEST SEED STARTING MIX is from Gardeners Supply and it has muchorrizae in it. i have never had a fungus gnat problem from a bag of their mix over several.seasons. Results are superior. I would never bake it.

Hi Gary I messed up on the height of lighting over my broccoli seeds and they are leggy now the leaves were touching the LED lights and then I moved it too high I guess 3 or 4 inches now they’re hanging over and I’m not sure if I should move them to cups or is it safe to plant them directly to pot cuz they’ll be in containers .. they get lost in a big pot? when and how should I transplant them?

I would prefer to have my setup in out basement, however, it is typically 60 degrees down there. Would I be able to do set up my lights and seedlings if I also incorporate a heat mat? Or do you have other suggestions?

  17. Ric R on April 7, 2019 at 8:40 pm

Very informative, very professional! Thank you for all you do, your channel has been incredibly helpful to me. I have a question that no one seems to know the answer to: is it a fact or a myth that onion seedlings will start to bulb prematurely if they get 16 hours of light per day?

  18. Pat Sutcliffe on April 7, 2019 at 8:40 pm

Hi Gary, thank you for all the great videos! I wanted to ask about the domes that come with some of the seed starting kits. Should I use them?

Gary, if I don’t use up all the pre moisten starting mix all at once, do I need to pre moisten the starting mix again with hot water each time I start another seed pack? Thanks!

  24. Gabriella M on April 7, 2019 at 8:43 pm

this information is so so helpful and very thorough I REALLY APPRECIATE IT! i’m sowing seeds indoors for the first time and my seeds are suffering from legginess. i’ll be using many cfl bulbs !!!!! thank you for this video

  25. Bill Baron on April 7, 2019 at 8:47 pm

Gary regarding the question concerning whether light is needed prior to germination….while it is true that the overwhelming majority of seeds do not need light prior, some, notably Begonias and Monarda (bee balm)….do need light in order to germinate.

  26. Olesya Legere on April 7, 2019 at 8:48 pm

i don’t get it, why would you need to do all that? i have a bag full of seeds and they got wet accidentally few weeks ago i found it today all of those seeds have germanated no light no heat inside of paper envelopes in a thin draw string bag you don’t need nothing fancy its hillarious as if plants require humans to grow, they’ll grow even if you just leave them to their own devices, its not rocket science

  27. Jeanne Balcom on April 7, 2019 at 8:48 pm

Hi  Gary, growing onion s and leeks for the first time, they are approximately 3-4 inches, kinda spindly.  should I trim them down some? Should I start fertilizing?  Any guidance  is much appreciated

  28. Amanda Heshka on April 7, 2019 at 8:50 pm

Hi Gary, Thank you so much for all your very helpful videos! I only have space for 2’ long grow lights, and all I could seem to find are blue spectrum LED. I thought they might be ok, but now I’ve noticed that they are only 3300 kelvins and I actually can’t find the number of lumens. They are a slightly pink color. Any idea if they will work for my seed starts? They were not cheap, so I’d rather return them if they won’t work as well.

  29. Sarah Spady on April 7, 2019 at 8:51 pm

How long do you microwave the seed starter? Do you use a high setting or lower? Do you leave it in the bag or a separate container?

  30. Maria Lane on April 7, 2019 at 8:52 pm

Amazing! I am so grateful to you!

  32. KM Patenaude on April 7, 2019 at 8:55 pm

    Hello Gary!
We could sure use your advice! Our family marathoned all your videos and jumped into seed starting with both feet (thank you so much, we love them!). I felt pretty well prepared…that is until nearly ALL of our seeds decided to germinate in under 3 days! It was an unexpected surprise. I thought we’d have weeks until the next stage. Now I’m frantically trying to figure out how I’m going to take care of these plants until we can put them outside, lol. I was trying to time it so they’d be just the right size to beginning acclimating them and keep them outside when our outdoor season began…but now I fear I’ll have good-sized plants on my hands before then. I’m praying my larger grow lights come in the mail before the seedlings get leggy…I’m worried about this. I hope we don’t lose the whole lot due to legginess. I’m in Austin, TX Zone 8b. Realistically, how soon do you think it will be safe to transfer them outside?

  33. Don High on April 7, 2019 at 8:55 pm

So glad I found your channel. By far the most informative and accurate germination tutorial I’ve seen. Thanks for your efforts.

Gary- I found this channel and love it. Question: I’ve already started most of my seeds. I’ve got about 170 cells that are doing great and getting ready to be transplanted to a larger vessel. I saw on this video that you suggest people boil water and pour over their soil. In my case, what would you recommend since my seeds are already started? This is my first ‘from seed’ garden.

    Thanks!

First of all who disliked? Why??? smh 🤦‍♀️ anyways gary I have a very important question I’m going to transplant my seedlings into bigger cups, I have seen alot of people add worm castings into their soil or seed mix I was wondering does that do anything? I saw one bag of warm casting in walmart if its beneficial and does alot to plants I’ll buy… thanks in advance Gary 💕
