If you can’t find a rug that will match your room decor or style you may want to consider painting your own rug. You can paint a rug using stencil, paint, stamping, or dye. You can use a simple paintbrush to create the perfect rug for your home.
Before you begin make sure you have all the supplies you will need to create your rug. You may want to try painting an old rug first to make sure that you can do it correctly and you get the look you are trying to create. Add some paintbrushes to your supply list as well as paint. Choose from fabric paint or fabric dye. You will also need a pattern to go by. You may want to use some stencil as well.
You have all your supplies ready now it is time to begin. Take the idea that you have in your head and put it on paper before you start. You must know exactly what design you wish to create. If you seen the look that you like in a magazine cut the picture out so you can refer back to it often.
Place your rug on an old tarp or several newspapers on the floor. You don’t want to make a mess on the floor. If it’s pretty weather outdoors you can move your masterpiece outside.
Your rug should be painted with fabric paint because fabric paint will last during high traffic wear and it is washable without wearing off. If you will be using stencil or stamps you still want to use fabric paint. To begin, place the fabric paint on a palette or a piece of waxed paper. If you are using stencil place the stencil on the rug and secure it. Using a stencil brush dip the brush in the paint and blot excess paint off. Using the dry brush technique will give you a perfect paint.
You can purchase fabric paint in just about any color at your local craft or arts store. It is water soluble and will not have a strong odor. If you get it on your hands, just wash it off with soap and water.
Fabric dye is another choice for painting a rug. It doesn’t come off of your hands well so be very careful when using. You can purchase these dyes at markets all around the world. Use the same instructions with the fabric dye as you would with fabric paint. Be careful that your dyes do not bleed. To avoid this, make sure that you remove all access paints and dyes from the brush before painting.
People are usually afraid to use the fabric dye in fear that the colors will bleed on each other, ruining the masterpiece they set out to create. But you shouldn’t let fear stop you from using it.
Regardless of which paint you choose for your rug you will do fine if you take your time and pay special attention to details while painting. Don’t worry about creating the masterpiece in a couple of hours. Allow yourself plenty of time to paint.
